The free version is great! I used this for ages but finally upgraded to the pro version just because I wanted to use the midi integration. The software not only plays back the sound file, but also sends midi commands to the desk to raise the fader and lower the fader when the sound has stopped playing. The only negative is some of the more simple commands can take a while to get your head around. For example cross fading tracks into each other. However they now have some great tutorials on the website, I would suggest watching these before you start using the software as it covers the basics well. The software is expensive, but is aimed at professionals and does much more than cheeper alternatives. Just one final thing next time you go to the theatre have a look what software the sound engineer is using, if they have a mac it will have Qlab on it! The free version is great for amateur groups for simple audio playback. QLab is truly one of those "how did I ever get along without it" items. I am the production coordinator and sound designer for my wife's Pulitzer Prize-nominated solo show "Now That She's Gone," which we've been doing theatrically for the last 3 years all over the world. ![]() Since this was my first foray into theater (my primary field of expertise is music for film and TV), I was using my MacBook Pro and a portable sub-mixer (for added control) to run the sound cues via iTunes with my other hand I was pushing the pause button on a DVD player. And I would be cueing the lighting operator at the same time, typically sitting next to me. It worked, I got by with it … but it was not an elegant solution. And if we were in a particularly cramped booth (aren't they all?) it was even more unwieldy. ![]()

![]() What GC wrote about Shenmue 3 (paraphrased): GC: The combat is probably the most changed element of the gameplay, and a step down from the Virtua Fighter lite system of the originals. PS: I did play the Xbox port of Shenmue 2 though, rather than the Dreamcast one, so maybe it was an inferior version, can’t remember what was said on that at the time. I actually thought Shenmue 2 was poor and gave up then after having loved the first game – there weren’t enough sailors – but I hope Shenmue 3 sells acceptably so that those that do like it can carry on enjoying the series. So, realistically, ‘faithful continuation of the series’ was always going to be the best case scenario and I was pretty dubious they’d even be able to achieve that given the relatively small budget and some of the dodgy-looking preview footage. ![]() Short of modernising the combat (shame they didn’t) I don’t see much that could have been done to update the series without making it not really Shenmue anymore. I’m pleasantly surprised by the generally positive-ish response to Shenmue 3. GC: He’s implied that Shenmue 5 would probably be enough. Kojima’s and Yu’s games might be failures on some level but that they’ve taken the money and said, ‘Sod it, I’m doing it how I want’ warms my heart… I love an out there indie as much as the next person but their short nature and limited scope (understandable given the finances) can be a drag. One thing that continues to frustrate me with current big budget gaming is (like blockbuster movies) how focus=grouped and charmless it is, trying to please everyone just makes it grey and boring. It’s interesting that Shenmue 3 and Death Stranding, two games from old school auteurs, have come out around the same time. Admittedly the Switch was very much still on the drawing board in 2015 when this was announced. Even the HD rerelease of the originals would probably still look good on the small screen. Maybe aiming for Switch would have been a better shout, given its weaker power spec they could have got away with putting out a PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 style open world game in terms of graphical and character model fidelity, putting more resources into the content. Now he has his engine and assets modelled in current tech maybe a fourth one can be turned out pretty quickly and cheaply. The lack of story closure does feel like hubris from ol’ Yu, I was kind of expecting a cliffhanger and a fourth game resolution, but he obviously has designs to make this run forever if he can. May there be many more.Įnjoyed the Shenmue review, I’m surprised you scored it, you must have been tempted not to bother. ![]() I am very happy that Yu Suzuki was finally given the chance to make his dream project. As mentioned, once you adapt to the games’ rhythm, it becomes a very rewarding experience. For those still on the fence, I strongly recommend giving the first two games a try and to have a little patience. Once it clicked, I was hooked and many of my favourite gaming memories are Shenmue related.Ī lot of gaming news these days tends to be on the negative side, so there’s something miracle-like about the fact that the third game exists and I truly, truly hope that the series will continue. I’m a couple of hours in the new game and finding it difficult to adapt to its rhythm, but I felt exactly the same with the first two games. As a day one backer and a fan since the original game nearly 20 years ago, I can completely understand the criticisms made at the game but am able to accept them, warts and all. In a way, it’s a very difficult game to review given the circumstances behind it, so appreciate your mature and calm review. Thank you for your fair and reasoned review of Shenmue III. If anything, reviews have more prominence today than they ever have, as a source of things for people to argue about on the Internet – even if there’s still only a small percentage of people that follow their advice. ![]() GC: Badly reviewed games have been selling well since gaming began. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hurray! Hovering (theoretically) at all times to the right, is the share/action card. The set of cards include (starting at the left-most, topmost “card”) the Home screen, the list of subscribed feeds and any folders or groups, the list of articles in those feeds, and then the article itself. That exact same gesture-reliant design philosophy is prevalent all throughout Unread as well. If I can’t picture an app as a set of cards laid out in a grid on a table, I can’t understand it. We take push/pop transitions at face value: swiping to go back is like pulling yourself back to where you were before. ![]() When talking about Riposte, developer Jared Sinclair, said this: The status bar doesn’t look like it belongs in the past, but it does have a slight nostalgic feel to it that is reminiscent of the more skeumorphic, graphics-heavy iOS designs of old. But don’t read that as a dig against the app’s design… There are little things - such as the design of the status bar at the top of the screen - that still feel reminiscent of iOS designs from yesteryear. The app has nearly both feet in iOS 7, but there is still a toe or two in iOS 6. I can’t put my finger on precisely what it is, but if I had to explain it in one word then I’d say Unread is peaceful.īut my hunch is that Unread will prove to be a somewhat polarizing app. I’ve long been a fan of Jared Sinclair’s design taste, and I consider Riposte to be one of the finest apps on my iPhone. The share sheet slides in from the right-hand side, and feels akin to the bouncy and playful animations of Tweetbot 3. It has all the expected features - you can send an article to Instapaper or share it on Twitter or text message it to your friends - and yet they feel unexpected. Unread is somewhat different than any other app I’ve used before. I paid $30 for NetNewsWire on my Mac half a decade ago, and now, years later, I’m using Unread on my iPhone instead. It’s on launch sale for just $3 and I think it’s worth 10 times that. ![]() The app is well designed and nice to use. It’s not that there’s anything in particular. The app is understated, extremely readable, and welcoming. It’s full of subtle animations and easy gestures. I’ve been using it with my Feed Wrangler account and it loads my unread items extremely quickly. Unread works with Feed Wrangler, Feedbin, and Feedly. I have been using Unread throughout its beta period for the past two months, and in that time it has quietly usurped the previous RSS reader on my home screen. It’s a brand new RSS app for the iPhone, and it is fantastic. I’ve also used Google Reader, NewsGator Online, Reeder for Mac, iPad, and iPhone, ReadKit, NetNewsWire on my iPhone, Byline, Fever, and probably a few more.Īnd now, today, we have Unread. But I soon moved on to Vienna, and then NetNewsWire 3.1 on the Mac (which, in my humble opinion, is one of the all-time best pieces of Mac software ever). He set me up with the RSS reader in Safari (which has long since been removed). “You can follow all those sites in one spot, you know?” But that Sunday morning, sitting next to my friend, he introduced me to an RSS reader. If you’ve read my review of NetNewsWire, you’re already familiar with the story: I used to keep all the blogs I enjoyed reading in a bookmark folder in Safari on my Mac. It was a Sunday morning in early 2007, and our Church had Wi-Fi, and I was sitting in a back corner with a friend, and instead of using my PowerBook G4 to take notes I was surfing the web reading all my favorite blogs. Like so many other life-changing moments, my relationship with RSS readers began in a church pew. Writing apps also can garner a connection with their users because they serve as the tool where we express our thoughts and feelings.Īnd though one might expect an RSS app to be insipid, or, at best, utilitarian, I find them quite the opposite - because they’re filled with the recent articles, photographs, and stories of my hand-chosen, favorite writers, photographers, and news outlets.Īn RSS reader is the window into your curated world. Twitter apps I think are like this because they’re filled with the life updates, corny jokes, and selfies of our friends and family. ![]() There are some apps which, due to the nature of their usage and/or contents, seem to earn a more personal connection from the user than other apps. ![]() ![]() ![]() As more research is gathered about that persona, you can circle back to the empathy map and add new insights or remove those that have changed or been invalidated.Įmpathy maps should be used throughout any UX process to establish common ground among team members and to understand and prioritize user needs. For example, an empathy map can be used to communicate a persona, instead of the traditional ‘business card’ approach. Aggregated empathy maps can also become ways to summarize other qualitative data like surveys and field studies.(However, empathy maps are not a replacement for personas. But they can be one way to visualize what we know about a persona in an organized, empathetic way.) The aggregated empathy map synthesizes themes seen throughout that user group and can be a first step in the creation of personas. They are usually created by combining multiple individual empathy maps from users who exhibit similar behaviors and can be grouped into one segment. ![]() Aggregated empathy maps represent a user segment, rather than one particular user.One-user (individual) empathy maps are usually based on a user interview or a user’s log from a diary study. They can help UX professionals understand what aspects of their user they know and where they would need to gather more user data.Įmpathy maps can capture one particular user or can reflect an aggregation of multiple users: Multiple-Users Empathy MapsĮmpathy mapping can be driven by any method of qualitative research (and can be sketched even if research is lacking). (If you don’t have anything to put into a certain quadrant, it’s a strong signal that you need more user research before proceeding in the design process.) One User vs. The 4 quadrants exist only to push our knowledge about users and to ensure we don’t leave out any important dimension. Do not focus too much on being precise: if an item may fit into multiple quadrants, just pick one. Some of these quadrants may seem ambiguous or overlapping - for example, it may be difficult to distinguish between Thinks and Feels. It is our job as UX professionals to investigate the cause of the conflict and resolve it. ![]() This is when empathy maps become treasure maps that can uncover nuggets of understanding about our user. You will also encounter inconsistencies - for example, seemingly positive actions but negative quotes or emotions coming from the same user. It is natural (and extremely beneficial) to see juxtaposition between quadrants.
